Have you ever had the feeling a cookie was watching you? That’s Peekaboo. Our googly-eyed double chocolate cookie is the mascot of Kookie Muncher, the face on our logo and the most photographed monster in our Cabanatuan kitchen. Here’s the story behind those big eyes.

Who is Peekaboo?

Peekaboo is a dark, fudgy double chocolate cookie with a crinkly cocoa top, chocolate chips inside and two big white chocolate eyes. It’s the darkest monster in the family and the shyest one too, which is funny, because it never stops looking at you.

Take a close look at our logo: the two O’s in KOOKIE are Peekaboo’s eyes. That’s how important this little monster is to us.

Peekaboo’s only rule

How Peekaboo became a monster

Peekaboo started out as the quietest dough in the kitchen. While the other cookies bragged about their chocolate chunks and Biscoff crowns, the cocoa dough just wanted to hide. Its favorite hiding spot? Inside the cookie box, right behind the little window.

Every time someone opened a box, the cocoa dough would pop up and whisper, “Peekaboo!” But it was so dark that nobody could tell it was even there. So we gave it the one thing it needed: two big eyes, so everyone would know it was watching.

Now every Peekaboo gets its eyes piped on by hand after baking: two dots of melted white chocolate, each with a chocolate chip pressed in as a pupil. No two come out the same. Some look left, some look up, and some look like they just heard the best chismis. That’s why we promise at least one googly-eyed cookie in every Mini Monster Box.

Why everybody loves a good peekaboo

There’s a reason Peekaboo makes people smile. The real game of peekaboo is one of the very first games babies play, and it works like a tiny joke: surprise, balanced with expectation. Psychologists connect it to object permanence, the moment babies learn that something still exists even when they can’t see it. Psychologist Jean Piaget concluded this usually clicks at around eight to nine months old.

Our Peekaboo knows all about object permanence. Just because you closed the cookie box doesn’t mean it stopped watching you.

What’s inside our double chocolate cookie

  • Midnight cocoa dough made with cocoa powder and melted bittersweet chocolate for a deep, fudgy flavor
  • Chocolate chips folded all the way through
  • Hand-piped white chocolate eyes with chocolate chip pupils

Why is chocolate dough so dark? Cocoa powder varies a lot in color. Some cocoa is treated with an alkaline solution to make it darker and less bitter, a method called Dutch processing that a Dutch chocolate maker developed in the 1800s. Cocoa dough also looks “done” before it actually is, so we take Peekaboo out of the oven while its center still looks slightly soft. That’s the secret to its fudgy middle.
